Talking really can help.
My typical client
I work with young men between 18 and 32 on concerns they have. Usually these concerns are around motivation, drive, habits, attention, anger, and substance use. Some come freely, but many are obliged to see me for legal or medication-management reasons.
No two clients are the same. Most clients are facing adjustment of some kind (school, career, fatherhood, divorce) or have an intense desire to address what is lacking in their lives.
My approach
I believe the biggest factor in whether therapy works isn't the therapist's method or their theory — it's whether the client likes and trusts their therapist. Decades of research keep landing there, and so does my experience.
I strive to earn that trust by offering:
Agency-Affirming Discourse
I try not to hand you answers. I ask more questions than make statements, and I try to push the conversation below the surface of actions & reactions into thoughts, feelings, values & beliefs.
Unconditional Confirmation
I don't flatter and I don't flinch. In counseling, you are free to be your unvarnished self. Whatever you bring, it's okay. Therapy is one of the only places where you're required to be who you are.
Arousal Reversal Techniques
Each week, we review the tape. We zoom in on the moments anger or anxiety felt distracting and disruptive. We discuss proactive techniques to be less disrupted in the future.
About me
I grew up in rural Maine in the 1980s, splitting my time between long bike rides, my books, and my Nintendo.
From a young age I wanted to be a teacher, and before becoming a social worker I was a high school English & history teacher. I graduated with my master's in social work in 2012 and have been in private practice for almost ten years.
Three years ago, I decided to work with men (and their families) exclusively. In my spare time, I enjoy camping, gaming, riding bikes with my kids, and vacationing with my family.
The consultation
I don’t contract with a client without a consultation first. It’s free, takes thirty minutes, and is done using the same platform I use for all sessions. We’ll talk about what brings you in, what you’re hoping to get out of our conversations, and I’ll answer any questions this website does not address.
